If you’re feeling symptoms such as those below, your Doctor may want you to wear a Holter monitor for 24-hours. Whilst wearing the monitor and going about your normal day, we’ll also get you to note any symptoms that may occur. You must then bring the list in the next day together with the Holter monitor. Symptoms to note are:
• Fainting
• Dizziness
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
There’s not a lot you need to do to prepare – but you will need to shower. A cardiograph (ECG) is performed prior to applying the Holter monitor. This shows your heart rhythm at the time. It will take approximately 15 minutes to apply the Holter monitor. You will be required to return the next morning to have the monitor removed and to hand in your diary.
The Holter monitor test is a very straightforward procedure:
• Electrodes are stuck to your chest
• The electrodes are connected to the small Holter machine device
• You’ll be shown how to attach the device to your clothes
The monitor is not water proof so you cannot have a shower or a bath until the monitor is removed.
