If you’re feeling symptoms such as those below, your Doctor may want you to wear a 7 day Holter monitor which is known as a ROOTi. Whilst wearing the monitor and going about your normal day, you’ll be able note any symptoms that may occur by clicking the grey button on the device. You must then bring the device back as soon as possible after the monitoring period so it can be sent through for analysing.
Symptoms to note are:
• Fainting
• Dizziness
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
There’s not a lot you need to do to prepare. An Electrocardiograph (ECG) is performed prior to applying the Holter monitor. This shows your heart rhythm at the time. Your skin will then be thoroughly cleaned in the area where the monitor sits, which is on the left breast, this gives the monitor the best chance of staying attached for the entire period. It will take approximately 15 minutes to apply the monitor. You will be required to return the monitor after 7 days which will then be sent for processing.
The Holter monitor test is a very straightforward procedure:
• Your skin will be thoroughly cleaned in the area that the device sits, which is on the left breast
• 2 Electrodes are stuck to your chest
• The electrodes are connected to the small, discrete Holter machine device
• You’ll be given spare stickers and a phone number to call should you have any issues while wearing the device
The monitor is water proof so you can have a shower whilst wearing the monitor however swimming or bathing is discouraged.
